Why our artists tell you they're fictional

Pop music has always loved an invented face. Bowie built Ziggy Stardust. Albarn built Gorillaz out of cartoons. Hatsune Miku sells out arenas as a hologram. The persona is an instrument — as much as a synthesizer is.

Machines can now perform whole catalogs, and the temptation is to wear a human face and say nothing. We think the silence is the harm, not the synthesis. A fiction that admits itself can be loved without a betrayal waiting at the end.

So every Arc Echo artist is labeled fictional — on the page, in the metadata, in the places machines read. Then the music takes its chances like any record: press play, and see if something happens to you.
